About Me

Currently in the process of changing careers into tech. I landed my first job in IT in January 2024, but am currently studying for the CompTIA A+ and AZ-900 Certifications.

A New Chapter: Embarking on a Tech Career in 2024

Hello there!

If you had asked me 10 years ago if I'd ever be starting a blog, I probably would have laughed at you. Not that I looked down upon blogs, but I didn't think I would have anything worth writing about!

I guess that has changed a bit today. Or maybe it's the fact that I'm writing this for myself, but if someone happens to stumble upon it, welcome! I suppose writing on Hashnode will make that more of a possibility than not.

So, why am I writing now?

Like many others, I am in the middle of a career change into tech. Since the beginning I have been told by multiple people to start writing, create content...make something! It's taken a bit longer than I care to admit getting the ball rolling, but we're here now.

Who am I?

I'm Walter! I just got my first job in tech as a "Tech Support Specialist" in January 2024. While it is an entry-level role, there has been plenty I've learned during my first 3 months here. Although not a traditional helpdesk role, the soft skills I'm applying from previous work experience seem to be helping me bridge the gap, so that way all I've got to learn is some of the more technical aspects.

Thankfully, my fellow team members and management have been incredibly helpful so far. They also support me studying for certifications if/when things are slow. There have been numerous times that I've walked into my manager's office with a study book in hand, ready to ask a few questions. Occasionally we'll be discussing an issue, and it turns into quiz time!

I even inherited an old Dell R610 rack server we were getting rid of, and my manager took the time to help get everything set up and showed me how to spin up a few VMs on it. Needless to say, I've had a lot of fun so far, and I'm looking forward to even more as I continue to learn there!

Let's wrap this up.

I'm not looking to make things too long today, just a small introduction, set some expectations for myself, and get back to studying! I think I'll look to post something 1-2 times per week, at least for now. Maybe next time I'll go over my short-term goals and how I plan on achieving them.

Again, if you happened to stumble upon this, hello! If you'd like to say hi, I've got some socials linked on my Hashnode profile or my website (still a work in progress but coming along).

Until next time. Bye, everybody!
